About Akira Fujiwara
Born in 1981 in Nara Prefecture, Japan, Akira Fujiwara is a ceramic artist specializing in traditional Bizen ware. After graduating from Kyoto Traditional Crafts College in 2003, he gained experience at a Shigaraki pottery kiln before apprenticing under Bizen artist Shunichi Fujimi in 2005. In 2010, he built his own climbing kiln by hand in Wake Town and began his independent practice. Working with locally sourced clay and firewood, Fujiwara embraces the natural transformations of the firing process, allowing each piece to develop its own unique character. His creations, ranging from matcha tea bowls and sake vessels to everyday tableware, reflect a deep respect for traditional Japanese craftsmanship and the expressive beauty of natural materials.
