About MATRIARCA
A MARKETPLACE FOR PRODUCTS MADE BY INDIGENOUS ARGENTINIAN ARTISANS
HAND WEAVING, CARANDILLO BASKETRY AND YICA KNITTING
SHEEP AND LLAMA WOOL, CHAGUAR AND CARANDILLO
Matiarca connects a network of 4,000 indigenous artisans from rural communities in Northern Argentina, Southern Paraguay and Southern Bolivia to showrooms, museum retailers, airport stores, fairs and an e-shop where they can show and sell their work. In doing so, Matricia seeks to cultivate sustainable economic growth in indigenous communities that preserves artisanal crafts, gives women opportunities to become economically independent, and protects the natural environment by providing economic alternatives to commercial deforestation.
At Panorama Mundi there are chaguar bags, ponchos and dresses that are handwoven by Wichí women in the North of Argentina, who use a knitting technique called Yica that involves natural dyes and chaguar fibers - a plant that grows in the Gran Chaco region of Argentina. There are also handwoven carandillo placemats, baskets and bags that are made by the Pilagá community using a palm leaf called Carandillo.
