About Shibaoka-Tousendou
Founded in 1912 in Inbe, Bizen City, Japan, Shibaoka-Tousendou is a family-run pottery workshop dedicated to preserving the heritage of traditional Bizen ceramics. Established by first-generation potter Shibaoka Kozan, the workshop is now carried forward by third-generation artisan Masashi Shibaoka and his sons, Chikara and Hisashi. Born in 1977, Hisashi Shibaoka began learning pottery under his father and elder brother in 2001, developing an approach that combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. Specializing in tableware, tea ware, sake vessels, and decorative ceramics, his creations explore the natural beauty of clay through refined forms, earthy tones, and distinctive firing patterns. His work emphasizes simplicity, functionality, and the pleasure of everyday use. Having participated in the Setouchi Triennale and collaborated with brands such as Panasonic, Hisashi continues to reinterpret the timeless traditions of Bizen pottery for modern living.
